Wigwam asked us to help them with a project to install communication boards at key locations across the island to make public spaces communication accessible so that ‘everyone can get their message across, no matter how they communicate’.
The boards are a grid style layout featuring words with corresponding symbols which individuals point to to communicate. They include a combination of core vocabulary (high frequency words that make up 80% of what we say e.g. go, where, finish) and fringe vocabulary (with more specific words e.g. trampoline, splash).
We have sponsored four boards: two at Beau Sejour, one by the main swimming pool and the second alongside the baby pool; and two at the library in the adult and children’s libraries.
