The Big Dig to rejuvenate Victoria Tower Gardens

Only Fools and Donkeys has been working with the States of Guernsey and Guernsey Water on a project to rejuvenate the garden surrounding Victoria Tower.  The project will revive this invaluable green space in St Peter Port benefitting the local community and visitors and providing a haven for wildlife.

The Big Dig over the weekend of 8-10 October is the first part of the project to remove and tidy up the existing plants and shrubs and get the initial plants in the ground.

Linda Armstead, from Only Fools and Donkeys, who is leading the project said, ‘As well as providing a calm and quiet retreat in this densely populated area of Town we see the garden as an opportunity for OF&D to offset its carbon footprint.  With that in mind, we have considered a number of factors in the planning of the garden: low or no dig, wildlife friendly, no or low watering plants, low allergen plants, permanent planting, plants for pollinators and promoting native species.’

Only Fools & Donkeys raise funds to support a variety of charities working with children, young people and adults with learning difficulties and physical disabilities.  The charity is proud to provide the ‘nitty-gritty’ aspects of projects, for example servicing bicycles at Le Rondin School, fitting out a catering level kitchen in The Village at Le Murier School and building and stocking raised flower beds at the P.E.H. for use by Headway amongst many others.

Linda added, ‘There are a number of ways for individuals and businesses to get involved.  We need some practical help over The Big Dig weekend and would love to hear from anyone who has a few hours to spare or if a business would like to use the weekend as part of their CSR provision and give some of their staff time to come and help.

We also have opportunities for individuals and businesses to sponsor aspects of the project – such as purchasing tools, one ton bags, plants and trees or bird boxes.’
